Video of the Week: Paint It Black's guerilla U-Haul trailer show at Fest 7
Posted by chris on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 10:00 PM (EST)
This year at the Fest 7 in Gainesville, FL; our Video of the Week comrades National Underground teamed up with beloved Philadelphia hardcore group Paint It Black for a rather unique Fest surprise following the Bouncing Souls' Saturday night headlining set. NU.org head honcho McKenzie Singleton explains:
About five months ago Dan Yemin and I mentioned in contact that we needed to do another PIB show. He said he and Andy Nelson had agreed they "needed to top last year's show" at Dirty Money's apartment. After months of bouncing back emails and such (while they were home from tour) we decided on doing a guerilla show. Just setup in a parking lot and play till the cops shut it down. So, on Halloween, Jason Burroughs and I went to get a uhaul and generator. We lined up a backline with Static Radio from New Jersey. Also drums from James in Dirty Money. Unfortunately, he kicked through his bass drum during their set that afternoon at the Venue Sidehatch. So, someone got ahold of Richard Minino (Horsebites, NMDS, Gatorface) and we used his kick and snare. We found a PA we could use through Vinnie (LTJ, P+P) and Ryan from Dirty Money helped us with that. Then, we had a power conditioner, mic and electrical cables from Eric Wysocki, our NU audio engineer. His car got towed from behind the Venue, so we had no way to use the PA or put the generator anywhere but right in front of the back of the truck. Andy wrote a love note to the Fest that Sue, NU PR Director, had run on pink quarter page notes with hearts on em. We'll get a copy scanned soon. Basically the note said to meet them in the parking lot after the Souls show...

This week's video features another up and coming band from the musical hotbed of New Brunswick, NJ. Let Me Run generate a sound with obvious influences from other New Jersey bands like Saves the Day, Thursday and the anthemic tendencies of the Bouncing Souls.
You can check out a live version of the track "I Don't Stomp, I Battle" from the band's debut LP Meet Me At The Bottom, which hits stores in January 2009 via XOXO Records, below by clicking Read More.

Living in Richmond, VA there are a few rules. First, if you move away, at some point you have to move back. Second, any frequently visited bar must have PBR. Lastly, you don't miss an Avail show. The last rule has been known to destroy relationships, get people fired and melt faces.
This week's clip isn't from a hometown show, but was captured during last year's Fest in Gainesville, FL by our chums over at National Underground. The video features a performance of the song "Scuffletown", which comes from the band's essential 1998 release Over The James.
Video of the Week: Flipper - live at Amoeba Records
Posted by chris on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 10:00 PM (EDT)
Last February we reported on a live performance from legendary San Fran punk group Flipper, to be held at Amoeba Records in the band's hometown. The famous record shop has graciously posted high-quality footage from the show online.
As a pioneering group in the west coast punk scene of the early 1980's, Flipper has been cited as a major influence by bands like NOFX and Nirvana.

Last month, we caught up with recently reunited Hot Water Music in the city of bro-therly love. The band has been playing a string of shows since reforming last year.
In the first installment of this feature, the band discusses song selection for the shows from a catalog of 100+ to choose from, their first practice in three years, and guitarist/vocalist Chuck Ragan's thoughts on rejoining the other members that had been playing together in The Draft together since HWM's separation in 2005. Additionally, we'd like to give special thanks to Rob Huddleston, frontman for Ann Beretta and Foundation (along with bass duties for Inquisition) for playing the role of interviewer.

This week's video, or the "Video Of The Week" if you will, features Scranton, Pennsylvania's Menzingers performing live in Richmond, Virginia. The four piece punk rock act has been working the road in support of their Go-Kart Records debut A Lesson in the Abuse of Information Technology, a record that's made huge fans of more than a few of your humble `Org editors. The Menzingers are on the road this month with Portland, Maine's the Leftovers if you want to check them out in person.

After an extended hiatus, which allowed the Punknews.org Video Studio (aka my shitty home office) to relocate (to a new house!), Video of the Week returns. You know what the best part about moving is? Finding things you forgot you had. Case in point, this week's video. I caught Fat Wreck Chord's short-lived hardcore outfit Western Addiction back in early 2006. Featuring Chicken from Dead To Me, the group played a melodically brash form of late 80's hardcore with obvious influences from bands like....the one mentioned in the featured clip's song title. The track comes from their only full-length release, Cognicide.

Last month, Ann Beretta returned to the stage after a long hiatus. Consisting of former members of Inquisition, Ann Beretta plays a brand of a rock-influenced punk consistent with bands like The Gaslight Anthem and The Loved Ones. This week's clip, "Not Invited" comes from that show and was featured on their last LP, Three Chord Revolution. The group will next perform in Baltimore at Insubordination Fest on June 27th.

This week we bring you footage from Glass and Ashes, who recently released their S/T sophomore LP via No Idea Records (which we are also streaming in its entirety at the band's Punknews profile page). Their brand of punkrock fused with metal and hardcore tenancies has been compared to the likes of Planes Mistaken For Stars.
The following footage was again provided by our amigos at National Underground, a new site devoted to providing free, high-quality live performances of some of the best bands in punk, hardcore and other related genres. Check out the band's performance at the Fest V by clicking Read More.
Video of the Week: Henry Rollins (Black Flag era) interview
Posted by chris on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 10:00 PM (EDT)
I wasn't quite sure what to run this week for our video. Then, fellow editor Justin sent me this interesting and hilariously uncomfortable (from a fellow interviewer's stance) video posted over at anti-hipster-yet-hipster-by-being-anti webzine Buddyhead. It features a young Henry Rollins being interviewed during his days with hardcore legends Black Flag. A few months ago, I tried to set-up a video interview with Mr. Rollins, but it didn't pan out. After seeing the following video, maybe that was a blessing in disguise.

In preparation for an upcoming tour, and debut LP release on Paper & Plastick, Richmond, VA's Landmines recently played a hometown show to test the new material. I worked with the band for a DIY live music video (translation: they paid for my "services" in beer") using a multi camcorder setup, something I've never done for my normal Video of the Week segment. Considering my inexperience, the final product didn't come out too bad. You can judge for yourself and flame away below.
The featured track is titled "Shadows and Ashes" and will be on the band's upcoming S/T record. You can check it out below by clicking Read More.

This week we are handing the Video of the Week reigns over to our friends over at National Underground. They started out in 2005 as a group of music enthusiasts who wanted to archive shows. They ended up with hundreds of sets recorded at The Fest (4-6) in Gainesville, and at shows all over Florida, recording studio quality audio and multi-camera video. The idea had been to start a label with the material, but eventually they decided to release it all online...For FREE! No gimmicks, just signup at NationalUnderground.org and you can download everything at absolutely no cost. They plan to release additional material soon from Fest 6, including sets from Dead To Me, Smoke Or Fire and American Steel
This week's video comes from Fest 5, and features the recently defunct Colorado post-hardcore-semi-metal outfit Planes Mistaken For Stars. Check it out below by clicking Read More.
